Build Your Own Coffee Bar and Make Coffee Time Extra Special
Looking for an easy Summer project? Why not combine it with your love of coffee at the same time and add a coffee bar to your home?
Building a coffee bar or coffee station in your home can be as easy or as difficult as you want to make it. Depending on your budget, your skillset, and your timeline, you can make a simple coffee bar with a few items or a full-service coffee bar with running water and the works. Let’s take a look at how you can have your own little cafe right at home.
Location, Location, Location
You really don’t need a lot of space to make your coffee bar. A corner of a counter is fine as is an awkward nook in your kitchen or dining room, a small closet, or just an empty spot in a corner or along a wall. A wet bar is an ideal choice for a coffee bar. The storage along with the water source make it super simple to brew your coffee. Once you determine where you want to set up your coffee bar, you’ll need a few items.
Water, Water Everywhere
You will need some kind of water source. The wet bar is easiest but is not the only option. A water cooler or a tabletop water dispenser will work just fine. Running a water line is possible but could be expensive and more disruptive than you are willing to put up with.
It’s Getting Hot In Here
The next thing to think about is how to heat your water. If you are using an espresso machine, a drip coffee maker, a percolator, or a Keurig-type machine, you won’t need a separate heating source. If you choose to use the pour-over method or a French press you will need either a kettle and a heat source like a hot plate or an electric kettle.
Pour Me A Cup
Keeping your coffee mugs close by is key. There are countless ways to display your mugs and have them at hand. Pegs on the wall, shelves, and cup hooks are easy ways to store your mugs and still have them ready to go. You can even show off where you get your delicious coffee from with one of these.
One Lump Or Two?
If you take creamer or sweetener or any other kind of modifier you will need to find a way to keep it on your coffee bar. A small refrigerator can keep fresh milk or cream handy. Sugar and powdered creamer can be kept right on the countertop. If you make specialty drinks, syrups can be kept on the counter or on shelves.
Make It Special
Once you have the basics down, then it’s time to make the space your own. There are so many options for decor, storage, and more. Here are a few ideas:
- Wine cabinets or wine bars are ideal choices for your coffee bar. They typically have enough storage for what you need.
- Liquor carts are great for small spaces or if you want to be able to move your coffee bar around.
- An armoire is great for keeping your coffee bar contained. When you’re not using it you can always close the door.
- Floating shelves can make a cool and eclectic looking coffee bar.
- Try an old dresser for your coffee bar. Add some shelves for extra visual interest as well as decoration.
- For a small countertop coffee bar, look for a tiered cake or serving stand. You can keep your coffees, sugar bowl, spoons, and more all together if your stand is large enough. You might even be able to store a kettle.
Your coffee bar is also unique to your particular style. From farmhouse to contemporary, minimalist to bohemian and everything in between, your coffee bar should reflect your personality. Pinterest is fantastic for inspiration. Just type “coffee bar” in the search bar and you will be presented with a plethora of fabulous coffee bar ideas.
