Celebrate Cinco de Mayo!
This year's Cinco de Mayo falls on a Tuesday giving a whole new meaning to Taco Tuesday. With many restaurants still either providing only take out or delivery or allowing just a small number of patrons to dine in, celebrating at home might be the best bet.
Here's a little music to get us in the mood. Now, let's take a look at how we can keep this vibe going.
Why Celebrate?
May 5th, 1862 was the date that the Mexican army defeated the French army at the Battle of Puebla. In Puebla, this day is celebrated through art festivals and reenactments. But why do we celebrate it? Sure, it may have become much like St. Patrick's Day, a day to party, but it doesn't have to be. It's the perfect opportunity to learn more about Mexican culture.
Arts
We've already got the music going. Mariachi music is a traditional Mexican genre of music. It is typically played by strolling musicians dressed in native costumes. This type of music dates back to the 1700s.
Along with mariachi bands, beautifully costumed dancers twirl and stomp their way through some lively steps to equally lively music. It can be mesmerizing watching the swirling colors.
Head to one of many museums to see beautiful pieces created by local artists. The Frida Kahlo museum virtual tour is a wonderful place to start.
History
Dig deep into Mexican history with a virtual tour of an anthropological museum. Learning more about the history of those who came before is an exciting endeavor.
Food and Beverage
All this activity is going to build up quite the appetite. What can we enjoy along with all this excitement? Tacos! Well, it is Taco Tuesday, after all. But there certainly is much more to Mexican cuisine than tacos.
Start your morning off with chilaquiles. Made with fried tortilla strips topped with spicy sauce and cheese, you can use this as a jumping-off point for so many different options. There are countless variations on this delicious theme, for example, this delight from Spices in my DNA. With the addition of the Mexican Street Corn, oh my goodness! That will certainly get you going in the morning. Add a cup of our Organic Mexico 'Altura Tollan' and you've got a meal. Provecho!
For lunch, you could certainly fall back on the typical tacos we've become accustomed to, but why not try something a little more special? Enter the Mexican Street Taco. These quick and easy Carne Asada Street Tacos from Damn Delicious look, well, delicious. Our mouths are watering just thinking about these tasty treats. Add a cold Mexican beer to wash it down and lunch is served.
Dinner can be as simple as shredded meat empanadas and seafood ceviche or as complex as enchiladas. Regardless of what you choose, a bright and refreshing mango salsa will make it even better. Try this easy version from My Latin Table. The sweet mango balances out the spicy heat beautifully.
As your day winds down, relax with a traditional Mexican dessert and a mouthwatering cup of coffee. Flan is a smooth egg custard topped with a sweet, liquidy caramel sauce. This delightful treat is the perfect choice for relaxing with our Decaf Mexico 'Spirit of the Aztec'.
Other Ways To Celebrate
If all that cooking seems too much, sit back and relax with a cup of one of our Mexican-inspired flavored coffees like our Mexican Liqueur and Cream Flavored coffee or our incredibly unique Spicy Taco Flavored coffee
Coffee isn't the only beverage you can enjoy. Try our Mexican Spiced Cocoa. This chocolaty drink has a kick of cinnamon spice that will make your taste buds sit up and take notice.
