ORIGINS OF CAPPUCCINO
To begin, cappuccino is a coffee-based drink that originated in Italy. Literally translated, it means “little hood.” While this may seem odd, it is actually very aptly named, and alludes to its religious roots. In terms of religion, this refers to the brownish hoods worn by the Capuchin order of Franciscan monks in the 16th century. Thus, little hood is a good description of the ‘head’ of foamed milk that tops the beverage, and encircles the darker coffee. The cappuccino as we know it today, actually didn’t appear until the 20th century, when enhanced versions of the espresso machine came out, and it became more widely available in North America.TOOLS
